29 October 2012 – Ms Wu Mei Ling, centre director of Students Care Service Hougang Centre, was one of the two winners of the 2012 Outstanding Social Worker of the Year Award. She received the award from President Tony Tan at a ceremony held at The Istana.
Mei Ling has been practising as a social worker since her graduation from NUS Social Work Department in 1996. She joined Students Care Service in 1999 and was appointed to her current position of centre director of the Hougang Centre since 2007.
Beyond her dedicated service to clients, Mei Ling also actively contributed to the social work profession through numerous professional sharing sessions, training and supervision, publications. She had provided consultancy services to an NGO in Malaysia and was a co-consultant to a government agency in Bhutan. In addition, her contribution to the profession included participation and leadership in many committees such as the Boys’ Town Case Review Board and Committee for Practice Standards. She also chairs the School Social Work Chapter, Singapore Association of Social Workers.
Students Care Service holds a unique and proud record as the only Voluntary Welfare Organisation with three Outstanding Social Worker Award winners – Ms Esther Koh, Ms Ng Cher Meng and Ms Wu Mei Ling – all of whom are still practising social work at the organisation.
