Help-seeking with us
Our Approach to Safe and Accessible Help-seeking
At SHINE Children and Youth Services, we recognise that concerns about confidentiality, caregiver consent, and costs can deter youths from seeking mental health support. Hence, we have established clear practices to address these barriers. The following sections outline how we mitigate these barriers by ensuring privacy, offering free access to care, and involving caregivers in ways that respect each youth’s safety, autonomy, and wellbeing.
We understand that privacy concerns are barriers for youths to seek help. We would like to assure that all our mental health practitioners are bound by confidentiality unless there is risk of harm or criminal offences which mandates reporting. We will only connect with caregivers and other significant agencies if necessary, or when the youth consents on the basis of keeping them safe or enhancing their help-seeking and/or recovery experience.
Our services are fully subsidised for youths and their caregivers, made possible by fundings from ministries, grantors and donors. As funded services, we hope to allow youths access to mental healthcare as we believe mental health IS a priority.
However, do note that while our services are available at no cost to youths and their caregivers, partnering schools or institutions may be charged for certain programmes.
Youths aged 14 and above are able to access most of our services independently, including outreach, psychoeducation, mental health screening or assessment, without requiring caregiver’s consent. For BRYEA programmes (Walk With Me and Just Fur Fun), parental consent is required for youths below 18. We recognise that strong family support is vital to youths' wellbeing and hence, we work towards involving caregivers where possible, notifying risks as needed while still respecting youths' choices. While we highly encourage caregiver consent when accessing counselling services, confidentiality is paramount. Any sharing of information will be discussed with youth's knowledge and consent. If you have trouble seeking consent, please speak to us and we will see how we can work out a plan together.
*Caregiver refers to a caring, responsible adult aged 21 years and above, which could include parents, grandparents, relatives, etc.*

Mental Health
Screening and Assessment
for Youths
Each session is between 60 and 90 minutes with the aim of understanding more about their mental wellbeing and learn more about what type of support can be helpful for them. Screening services are free of charge.
With so much information on mental health being shared around, it is likely that an inaccurate self-diagnosis can be made! Hence, we strongly encourage youths who are in distress and need support to have a conversation with our qualified mental health professionals to gain insights into their mental wellbeing. Thereafter, we’ll provide recommendations and assist them in accessing the resources and support available to address their mental health needs.
Psychosocial Support
Social support is essential in having good mental health. However, receiving it may not always be easy. This is where we provide psychosocial support where a mental health worker will be tagged to each youth.
The mental health worker will perform regular check-ins with youths through text or physical meet ups during our working hours.
Therapeutic Support
Many young people face emotional or social challenges that can feel heavy to navigate on their own. Therapeutic support offers a safe, confidential space where youths can explore their thoughts and experiences with a mental health professional.
Support may include understanding emotions, stressors, and personal challenges, developing practical coping strategies and healthier ways of responding and connecting youths to additional resources or services when needed.

Caregiver Support
Should caregivers require psychoeducation, brief counselling and other supportive services in enhancing mental health literacy, while supporting their youths' mental health recovery and prevent caregiver burnout, do reach out to us.

Get Involved
There are many ways to walk alongside children and young people as they grow. Every role, every effort, contributes to care, consistency and belief.
